Broom Ministry - Community Outreach

Broom Ministry is a great opportunity for Youth Groups to
get out into the community with a positive message about
what is good about the young people of today.

With only the investment of some basic cleaning supplies and
a lot of "elbow grease" our young people can make a lasting impression on store-owners and patrons at a local strip-mall.

Organization:

Teams are designated prior to the event (usually 4 - 5 youth per team)
2 members equipped with brooms, dust pans and plastic trash bags
2 members equipped with window cleaner and paper towels
1 member with witness cards (optional)

Each team MUST have adult supervision and no more than two teams per adult supervisor.

Needed Supplies:

  1. Protective gloves
  2. Paper Towels
  3. Spray Window Cleaner
  4. Brooms
  5. Dust Pans - preferably the type with a handle
  6. Large Trash Bags
  7. Witness Cards - Church Name, Address, Phone Number - GOD LOVES YOU (reverse side)

Operation:

The adult leader and one youth team member meet with the store-owner or manager of a local
business before the ministry work is started. In that meeting you explain that you would like
permission to sweep the sidewalk and clean the windows of their storefront. Tell the store-owner
or manager that you will NOT interfere with their business or patrons. Secure verbal permission
from the store-owner or manager before any work is done.

Two team members sweep trash and debris from the sidewalk in from of the storefront.
All trash is placed in plastic bags for removal later. Two other team members clean the windows
of the storefront with Windex and paper towels, being careful not to damage any signs, decals or
messages that the owner may have placed on the glass. (Only the outside glass is cleaned)

The fifth team member is ready to answer questions from on-lookers, explaining that the reason
you and your team members are doing this is to let them know GOD LOVES THEM! Do not initiate
contact, but be ready to engage those who ask questions. Have ready a small card (business card size)
with the name of your church, the address, phone number and a brief message telling them
GOD LOVES THEM.

Remember - NEVER impede the patrons and do not block the door or entrance into the business.

Safety:

  1. Team members MUST stay together and work as a TEAM.
  2. Do Not enter the stores - other than the initial meeting with the owner.
  3. Do Not operate in the parking area off of the sidewalk.
  4. Do Not pick up items that you are uncertain of.
  5. Always use protective gloves.
  6. Do Not approach cars - even if beckoned by the occupants
  7. Ask the adult supervisor if you are not sure what to do.
  8. No horse-play - remember you are a witness (Good or Bad)
  9. If a team member needs to use the restroom - notify the adult supervisor.
  10. Be careful when cleaning the windows not to block the door.
